NO. 3.

From Chief Engineer, South China Command, to the Colonial Secretary.

C.O. 46436 Head Quarters, 84 17 DEC 05: Hongkong, 11th October, 1906.

With reference to your letter No. 3547/03/C.S.O., dated 3rd instant, on the subject of site for Electric Light emplacement recently destroyed by typhoon; the position of this emplacement was fixed in agreement with the Colonial Government, and it would be detrimental to the efficiency of the lights to change it.

I cannot suppose that the Government of Hongkong would seriously set the convenience of one individual trader before the efficiency of the defences of this Colony.

I would point out that the replacement was "in situ" before the Godown was built.

In connection with this, the question will be shortly raised as to setting back the site on the Praya for these lights, which are liable to destruction at any time a typhoon blows from the West, as before erected.

Your sketch showing the proposed position is not clear, as though a site is indicated, a note has been made (unsigned) saying the emplacement should be to the West of a dotted line through the centre of the proposed site.

Plan returned herewith as requested.

I have etc.,

(Sd.) C. H. Darling, Colonel, Chief Engineer, South China Command.

The Colonial Secretary.
